s%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fdoi.org%5C%2F10.1007%5C%2Fs10579-019-09459-3%3C%5C%2Fa%3E.%3C%5C%2Fdiv%3E%5Cn%3C%5C%2Fdiv%3E%22%2C%22data%22%3A%7B%22itemType%22%3A%22journalArticle%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Computational%20text%20analysis%20within%20the%20Humanities%3A%20How%20to%20combine%20working%20practices%20from%20the%20contributing%20fields%3F%22%2C%22creators%22%3A%5B%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Jonas%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Kuhn%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22This%20position%20paper%20is%20based%20on%20a%20keynote%20presentation%20at%20the%20COLING%202016%20Workshop%20on%20Language%20Technology%20for%20Digital%20Humanities%20in%20Osaka%2C%20Japan.%20It%20departs%20from%20observations%20about%20working%20practices%20in%20Humanities%20disciplines%20following%20a%20hermeneutic%20tradition%20of%20text%20interpretation%20versus%20the%20method-oriented%20research%20strategies%20in%20Computational%20Linguistics%20%28CL%29.%20The%20respective%20praxeological%20traditions%20are%20quite%20different.%20Yet%20more%20and%20more%20researchers%20are%20willing%20to%20open%20up%20towards%20truly%20transdisciplinary%20collaborations%2C%20trying%20to%20exploit%20advanced%20methods%20from%20CL%20within%20research%20that%20ultimately%20addresses%20questions%20from%20the%20traditional%20Humanities%20disciplines%20and%20the%20Social%20Sciences.%20The%20article%20identifies%20two%20central%20workflow-related%20issues%20for%20this%20type%20of%20collaborative%20project%20in%20the%20Digital%20Humanities%20%28DH%29%20and%20Computational%20Social%20Science%3A%20%281%29%20a%20scheduling%20dilemma%2C%20which%20affects%20the%20point%20in%20the%20course%20of%20the%20project%20when%20specifications%20of%20the%20core%20analysis%20task%20are%20fixed%20%28as%20early%20as%20possible%20from%20the%20computational%20perspective%2C%20but%20as%20late%20as%20possible%20from%20the%20Humanities%20perspective%29%20and%20%282%29%20the%20subjectivity%20problem%2C%20which%20concerns%20the%20degree%20of%20intersubjective%20stability%20of%20the%20target%20categories%20of%20analysis.%20CL%20methodology%20demands%20high%20inter-annotator%20agreement%20and%20theory-independent%20categories%2C%20while%20the%20categories%20in%20hermeneutic%20reasoning%20are%20often%20tied%20to%20a%20particular%20interpretive%20approach%20%28viz.%20a%20theory%20of%20literary%20interpretation%29%20and%20may%20bear%20a%20non-trivial%20relation%20to%20a%20reader%5Cu2019s%20pre-understanding.%20Building%20a%20comprehensive%20methodological%20framework%20that%20helps%20overcome%20these%20issues%20requires%20considerable%20time%20and%20patience.%20The%20established%20computational%20methodology%20has%20to%20be%20gradually%20opened%20up%20to%20more%20hermeneutically%20oriented%20research%20questions%3B%20resources%20and%20tools%20for%20the%20relevant%20categories%20of%20analysis%20have%20to%20be%20constructed.%20This%20article%20does%20not%20call%20into%20question%20that%20well-targeted%20efforts%20along%20this%20path%20are%20worthwhile.%20Yet%2C%20it%20makes%20the%20following%20additional%20programmatic%20point%20regarding%20directions%20for%20future%20research%3A%20It%20might%20be%20fruitful%20to%20explore%5Cu2014in%20parallel%5Cu2014the%20potential%20lying%20in%20DH-specific%20variants%20of%20the%20concept%20of%20rapid%20prototyping%20from%20Software%20Engineering.%20To%20get%20an%20idea%20of%20how%20computational%20analysis%20of%20some%20aspect%20of%20text%20might%20contribute%20to%20a%20hermeneutic%20research%20question%2C%20a%20prototypical%20analysis%20model%20is%20constructed%2C%20e.g.%2C%20from%20related%20data%20collections%20and%20analysis%20categories%2C%20using%20transfer%20techniques.%20While%20the%20initial%20quality%20of%20analysis%20may%20be%20limited%2C%20the%20idea%20of%20rapid%20probing%20allows%20scholars%20to%20explore%20how%20the%20analysis%20fits%20in%20an%20actual%20workflow%20on%20the%20target%20text%20data%20and%20it%20can%20thus%20provide%20early%20feedback%20for%20the%20process%20of%20refining%20the%20modeling.%20If%20the%20rapid%20probing%20method%20can%20indeed%20be%20incorporated%20in%20a%20hermeneutic%20framework%20to%20the%20satisfaction%20of%20well-disposed%20Humanities%20scholars%2C%20a%20swifter%20exploration%20of%20alternative%20paths%20of%20analysis%20would%20become%20possible.%20This%20may%20generate%20considerable%20additional%20momentum%20for%20transdisciplinary%20integration.%20It%20is%20as%20yet%20too%20early%20to%20point%20to%20truly%20Humanities-oriented%20examples%20of%20the%20proposed%20rapid%20probing%20technique.%20To%20nevertheless%20make%20the%20programmatic%20idea%20more%20concrete%2C%20the%20article%20uses%20two%20experimental%20scenarios%20to%20argue%20how%20rapid%20probing%20might%20help%20addressing%20the%20scheduling%20dilemma%20and%20the%20subjectivity%20problem%20respectively.%20The%20first%20scenario%20illustrates%20the%20transfer%20of%20complex%20analysis%20pipelines%20across%20corpora%3B%20the%20second
